LEADERSHIP

What is Personal Leadership & Why Does it matter?

By Mairead Mackle

When we established Evolve, I felt strongly about incorporating personal leadership into its core pillars.  Since its launch, people continue to ask me ‘why personal leadership?’ and more importantly, ‘what is personal leadership?’. So, I thought I would take some time to look at what it is and how important it can be in your journey.

It’s so easy to get carried away by the mundane tasks that can consume us in our everyday lives, but personal leadership allows us to declutter our mind and re-focus on our goals. Positive leadership traits help to guide us in the right direction, allowing us to take control and stop leaving everything to chance.

Why does personal leadership matter? Good question!  When we work out what our core values are, and when we implement them in our lives, we’re taking the steps into becoming the best version of us, evolving into greatness!  It can start here and now when we establish our own values, life goals and the mission we want to live by.  Here are some qualities to start thinking about:

1. Vision

The first step to personal success is having a vision of where you want to go, or, what it is you want to achieve.  I think the biggest mistake any of us make is giving ourselves a hard time about not reaching success, when in fact, we didn’t plan the route and don’t know where we’re headed!

Evolve from it...

Sit yourself down with a glass of wine, book and pen, and list!  List the things you want to work towards and achieve.  When you’ve listed them, order them into long, medium and short term.

2. Integrity

Truth and honesty, or integrity, can help you earn the respect and trust of those around you.  My attitude has always been to say what you mean and mean what you say.

Evolve from it...

I’m not saying this is the only way, but just trying to be as realistic as possible with what I can do or where I can be at a certain time works for me.

3. Legacy Building

“A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.”

- Charles Spurgeon

Evolve from it...

Let us all be remembered for the memories we created and not the money we made.

Personal leadership is an ongoing process which we all get better at the more we self-reflect and self-evaluate.  With a willing attitude we can all develop the qualities of an effective personal leader.

Love,
MM
